An OLAP application is focused to convey most reactions to clients inside around five seconds, with the least complex examinations taking close to en second and not very many taking over 20 seconds. Fretful clients regularly accept that a procedure has fizzled if results are not gotten with 30 seconds, and they are well-suited to execute the CB finger salute or Cite*Strict+Diet except if the framework cautions them that the report will take longer. Thoreau firmly looks to dodge Emerson any place he can't overhaul him straightforwardly. Just Walden was excluded from blame. Thoreau was a sort of American Mahatma Ghandhi, a Tolstoyan recluse rehearsing local expressions and artworks out in the forested areas. He was not so much an oppositional or rationalistic mastermind, similar to Emerson, however surely an oppositional character, as the sacrosanct Emerson was most certainly not. Being likewise something of an elitist, again and not at all like Emerson, Thoreau couldn't generally oversee Emersons developing a sort of Longinian talk by citing without reference. Walden, for its unending force, is as often as possible uncomfortable due to an implicit nearness, or an interminable nonappearance that should be a nearness, and that expressed in Thoreaus diary: Emerson doesn't think about things in regard to their fundamental utility, yet a significant incomplete and relative one, as show-stoppers maybe. His tests pass one side of their focal point of gravity. His embellishment is of a section, not of the entirety. This is just a frail misreading of Emerson. Be that as it may, it credits to Emerson what is really Thoreaus modification of Emerson. We will compose a custom exposition on Thoreau a sort of American Mahatma Ghandhi explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now Thoreau was likewise a sort of Gnostic, however the agitator Thoreau stayed a Wordsworthian, perusing nature for confirmations of a progression in the ontological self that nature basically couldn't give. Walden is considered as both a straightforward and a troublesome book, basic in that perusers feel a feeling of solidarity. It is troublesome in that they have been constantly confused and at times urged in structure. The essential inquiry is to look for what Walden implies. There is additionally the worry with Waldens style. Waldens importance can be clarified in two distinct manners. The first is by presenting a differentiation among structure and substance which at the same time concentrates consideration on the topic of structure and decreases substance to minimal more than prohibiting. From the primary move follows the all the more intriguing and progressively inescapable second significance. The distraction with Waldens formal characteristics turns Waldens importance from a straightforward perspective. The statement is to look at the type of any scholarly ancient rarity, which is to distinguish its fundamental solidarity, in this manner the worry with Waldens basic completeness is coordinated well in the book. As such, one can say that the basic lesson of Walden is the ethicalness of effortlessness. Thoreau subbed words like destitution, a word which set him apart from his materialistic neighbors. By neediness, he stated, straightforwardness of life and fewness of episodes, I am hardened and solidified, as a fume or fluid by cold. It is a solitary grouping of solidarity and vitality and flavor. Celibacy is never-ending colleague with the All. My diffuse and vaporous life becomes as ice leaves and spiculae brilliant as diamonds on the weeds and stubble an a winter morning. Such neediness or immaculateness was a need of Thoreaus economy. By effortlessness, which Thoreau called neediness, his life gets focused and composed. Walden filled Thoreaus quick need of self-treatment. In this viewpoint, Walden is the goals Thoreau had the option to satisfy through craftsmanship. He had affected his own goals through careful undertaking and develop quietness. Be that as it may, this peacefulness of Thoreau, is a triumph of control. He says it is the most noteworthy point throughout everyday life, which requires the most noteworthy and best order. To get one with Nature is to turn into a spirit mirroring the completion of a being. His craving to see things really and just brought about his conviction that lethal coarseness is the consequence of blending unimportant undertakings of men. So as to legitimize his commitment to virtue he composed Walden. He accepted that when men can locate his common place, a guarantee of the higher society man is conceivable. Like different works of his time, it has the interesting exertion of American sentimentalism. It has amazing independence and the longing for understanding. .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f , .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .postImageUrl , .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .focused content territory { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f , .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:hover , .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:visited , .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:active { border:0!important; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; progress: murkiness 250ms; webkit-change: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:active , .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:hover { mistiness: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relati ve; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enrichment: underline; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; fringe range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: striking; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe span: 3px; content adjust: focus; content beautification: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: total; right: 0; top: 0; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u08b7 3c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u08b73c57953b7ac37ad72fbb445bdd4f:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Annie Lennox EssayIn the end, Thoreau expressed that if a keeps an eye on works are deciphered more than one form, it is viewed as a ground for objection. He needed Walden to be a reality genuinely and completely expressed, else he would have thought of it as a disappointment if is served uniquely to impart an unconventionalities refusal to oblige society, whenever taken actually. Walden is an encounter of the astronomical goes of oneself. At Walden lake, he composed that the creative mind of oneself is the best image of our life. He went to Walden lake since he needed to discover a spot where you can walk and think wi th the least check. He needed a street where he could head out and to recuperate the lost youngster that he is with no ringing of a ringer. The idea of the control of crude worries with fundamentals like structure a cottage, planting, gathering beans, angling and naturalizing, gives every it profound quality. Walden was Thoreaus journey for a reality he had lost, and it was a mission for immaculateness. Virtue to Thoreau was an arrival to the spring of life, to the brilliant age of his childhood and faculties. Superintendent follows the pattern of creating awareness, a cycle that matches the difference in the seasons. It involved sanitization since Thoreau had arrived at the winter of rot at the time Walden was being modified for the press. Thoreau was not a naturalist but rather a characteristic antiquarian of the acumen utilizing normal realities as images for his journey for motivation. He said that the characteristic world reflects ourselves. In this sense, the Walden lake was the image. His motivation was not to come back to nature, yet to join the toughness of savages with the savvy of the cultivated man. The socialized man to Thoreau, is a progressively experienced and more shrewd savage; Life is most remunerating when chaneled by scholarly standards. janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-13599380952286574492020-08-09T11:09:00.001-07:002020-08-09T11:09:02.741-07:00Business As Usual . . . and then Some COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions BlogBusiness As Usual . . . and then Some COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog As I mentioned in an earlier post, roughly 50% of the applications we receive each year are submitted within 72 hours of the deadline. Recent growth in scientific knowledge has helped humanity comprehend the complex relationships in ecosystems and the devastating effects of human interference. As a result we have become increasingly aware of the need to protect and manage the ecosystems that we do have remaining for their utility, genetic, intrinsic and heritage values and also for the need to allow natural change and thus evolution to take place. Natural ecosystems have provided much that has been of benefit to humanity and with careful protection it can last for many more generations. Management strategies involving sustainable development, total preservation and the educating of the populace are becoming progressively more important in todays society and for theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As seen in numerous examples where wild varieties of species have been crossbred with cultivated varieties to obtain disease resistant or high crop yielding new varieties, without the genetic diversity available, none of it w ould be possible. In 1860s the European vineyards were completely destroyed by phylloxera but later grafting with an American species led to a variety resistant to the disease. Also Indian rice was discovered to be resistant to two viruses and after implementation, led to an improved yield on 30million hectares in Asia. A single gene from a barley growing in Ethiopia protects the entire Californian barley crop worth $US 150million/yr from the yellow dwarf disease. It can be seen that there are linked crossovers between reasons for management and the usefulness of ecosystems. Wild strains of species, many as of yet undiscovered, have desirable properties, such as disease resistance and increased crop yield, which tend to be lost in successive generations with selective breeding under artificial conditions. Natural ecosystems should be maintained so as new genes can be added from the wild populations to keep crops resistant to diseases which continue to develop new strains. The ecosystems also may yield new species of plants and animals suitable for use in cultivation and grazing. Examples include red deer, the loblolly pine and kiwi fruit that have recently been added to agriculture and forestry economic lists. Poets frequently utilize vivid images to further depict the overall meaning of their works. The imagery in ââ¬Å" the War Was in Its Infancy Then,â⬠by Maurice Emerson Decaul, conveys mental images in the readerââ¬â¢s mind that shows the physical damage of war with the addition of the emotional effect it has on a person. The reader can conclude the speaker is a soldier because the poem is written from a soldierââ¬â¢s point of view, someone who had to have been a first hand witness. The poem is about a man who is emotionally damaged due to war and has had to learn to cope with his surroundings. By use of imagery the reader gets a deeper sense of how the man felt during the war. Through the use of imagery, tone, and deeper meaning, Decaul shows us theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Near the end of the poem, Decaul makes a dejected image as he speaks of ââ¬Å"lifeâ⬠being similar to ââ¬Å"dewâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"disappearing dewâ⬠(26,27,28). By saying this, Dec aul shows us how fast a life comes and ends. The many different unfortunate and unhappy images the soldier witnesses, help the reader to connect and understand the overall meaning of what life is like during the war. It displays how the soldier would describe his life. By relating life to dew, the reader sees how melancholic a person can potentially become due to war. These images guide the reader to connect with the author and detect the unhappy emotions specified in the poem. By analyzing the deeper level meaning in the images presented, the readerââ¬â¢s sympathy increases. Primarily, Decaul uses the beginning of his poem to grasp the readerââ¬â¢s attention by explaining the tragic activity occurring on his birthday. In doing this he uses traumatic imagery, such as ââ¬Å"black smoke risingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"artillery strikesâ⬠to further describe the scenery upon his ââ¬Å"birthday.â⬠These meaningful descriptive images bring the reader in creating a connection b etween us and the inner feelings of the soldier. The idea of providing mental images, supports the distressing activities encountered on the soldierââ¬â¢s birthday. Even though the poem does not bluntly tell us Decaul is frightened at the setting, words, such as ââ¬Å"tappingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"remindsâ⬠, inform us of how he has taught himself to stay ââ¬Å"safe.â⬠Decaul has to janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-39494735674387915482020-05-06T12:18:00.001-07:002020-05-06T12:18:24.165-07:00The Birthday Boys by Beryl Bainbridge Free Essays Through the ââ¬ËBirthday Boysââ¬â¢ Beryl Bainbridge has written the accounts of five very different men and their heroic fight to achieve indissoluble greatness. Fascinatingly this straightforward expedition reveals some of the most complex revelations about Edwardian society and its misplaced British class system. Even more interesting is the morals and opinions of the five men and how their desire, whatever it was, drove them to their deaths. We will write a custom essay sample on The Birthday Boys by Beryl Bainbridge or any similar topic only for you Order Now We see how Captain Scott, possibly one of the most well-known British heroes, miscalculated time and time again, and learn through the other narrations how he begins to lose the initial trust of his men. Heroism and the values surrounding it were somewhat different then to what they are now. Heroism was far more special and idiosyncratic as the final narrative of captain Oates reveals to us. When reading the book it never feels like a team effort. It is one where the reader follows each individual and their plight for what they wish to achieve. I think the heroism present in the ââ¬ËBirthday Boysââ¬â¢ is so idiosyncratic because there does not appear to be a common goal. With the exception of Dr. Wilson, these men were not going to the South Pole for Scientific Research, they were there for the glory, and they were there for the chance to be a hero. This drove them on. Temperatures in the Antarctic reached below -60iC, which was more than most of them had ever dreamt of suffering. It took more than just physical strength to survive those conditions; it was their mental strength, courage and belief. Each man had different ideas of what this heroic status would mean. Taff Evans explains how when he returns from the pole he will be in a position to quit being a sailor and ââ¬Ëbuy a little pub in Cardigan bayââ¬â¢. He saw this simple, honest ambition as being an ample reward for becoming a hero. Scott of the Antarcticââ¬â¢, perhaps one of the most controversial of British Heroes, is very carefully examined by Beryl Bainbridge. Those readers who thought he was an unlucky explorer, caught out by nature but a great leader, are refuted. Those who thought that he was an inhumane, terrible leader are shown his good points. Bainbridge manages to bring a certain realism to the portrayal of a hero whom many have formed strong opinions with very little foundation. He is a very determined and positive leader yet when setting out to an unexplored continent he needs a lot more than determination and a will to succeed. It is easy to feel that Scott has overlooked this. He lacks carefully planned routes and he never has a backup plan when the least he should have is a backup plan for the backup plan! His optimism, in my opinion, is his greatest downfall. He opens his narrative: Having to sail on past Cape Crozier came as a frightful blow. Iââ¬â¢d banked on establishing our winter quarters there, but it proved impossible to land owing to the swell. These two sentences sum up Scottââ¬â¢s inadequacies. Firstly, we see thereââ¬â¢s no direct self-blame. He affirms this constantly through his narrative ââ¬â when it is obviously his fault no-one holds responsibility, and when it is not clear who is to blame he would use names: I blamed Gran, Oates, Meares ââ¬â especially Meares. Secondly, he doesnââ¬â¢t particularly worry about the fact that they will have to locate a new Winter Camp. It was merely a frightful blow, thatââ¬â¢s all. He does not dwell on it, in fact by the next paragraph he is already talking about their new location. Finally, perhaps the most unforgivable examples of Scotsââ¬â¢ lack of preparation was that they were unable to moor at Cape Crozier was because the sea had waves on it! Scots idiocy was one of the main reasons for the fate of the Polar Party. For two years he had been setting up supply camps for their return journey to cater for four people, and then decided that five could go along. One would hope a child would not make that sort of mistake let alone an experienced explorer. Despite this no one made any objections. There was a clear hierarchy amongst these men. This hierarchy meant that few decisions were questioned and inevitably when people disagree with a decision, like dropping the skis due to a change of terrain, they lose confidence in their leader and morale drops. The Birthday Boysââ¬â¢ by Beryl Bainbridge is a carefully written analysis of the Edwardian society, picking up on their naivety, their disjointed class system and their wish to gain respect through becoming a hero. The book is called the birthday boys because the author has captured the child-like qualities of the 1910 expedition so perfectly. It is clear that the death of these men was not needed ââ¬â yet, by dying, they did achieve the indissoluble greatness they desired and one can only feel that this temptation may itself have contributed to their fate. In analysis of the building of Jonasââ¬â¢s community, some may debate that the community is a utopia or a dystopia. Some may claim of it being a utopia based on the way that they want their world to be and that is different based on each ones opinion of a utopia, while others may argue of it in being a dystopia and claiming that it is not fit for living, maybe someone has a good point there. There are different things in the normal community than in Jonasââ¬â¢s community some may be good and some may be bad. The Givers community is particularly different than our own community; again everyone has their own definition of the word normal in this world. We will write a custom essay sample on Utopia or dystopia or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Jonasââ¬â¢s community may differ from many communities based on a few points, one of these points is that they are always under surveillance and no one is ever alone and you can never do anything without the people knowing; of course the Givers room is an exception. Like when Jonas said that he was starving and they heard him over the microphones. They have all their lives planned out since the moment they are born; even the facts that they donââ¬â¢t even go to live with their birthparents, they even have a ceremony that they get to receive things in and where they claim their jobs. Then all throughout the years they can never do anything that is against the rules and they would get punished if they do, the punishment isnââ¬â¢t even decided by the parents its decided by the even use of excessive language and over exaggerated language is not allowed, once again just like what happened with Jonas in the cafeteria when he stated that he was hungry. Once they have grown old, like elderly not just adults, they get a treatment like the kings and queens; the job that his friend had there, Lowry tried to show how much relaxation that they have by writing a part stating that they were giving a shower to the elderly. The way that his community is described throughout the book may perhaps create a controversy on whether or not its a utopia. People have numerous ideas of what a perfect world is made up of; a handful of these may fit in with Jonasââ¬â¢s community making it a utopia. What is a utopia made up of? Well no one can actually tell you; each person has their own philosophies. You will never have everyone on the same page, perhaps the fact that everything provided there makes it a utopia. People get food, drinks, clothes and everything else they need, Lowry even got a part where it was said that they receive all meals all the time and that they are never hungry nor thirsty, What more would a person want? They get to go to school and they get jobs and they even train them to make them ready and perfect for their jobs, these jobs are all assigned to them at the ceremony of twelves and then they even get their own teacher, not like a real teacher but like a mentor. Once they get older they are treated miraculously and like royalty and get everything they need until itââ¬â¢s their time to go, they even get volunteers to give them showers and help them all the time at whatever time they need. But perchance this idea is wrong; maybe the community isnââ¬â¢t just fit to be a utopia and is a dystopia. On the contrary to what was claimed beforehand Jonasââ¬â¢s community might as well be a dystopia. There are numerous concepts that make the community a dystopia. One of the things is that they are always under observation, which is why Jonas could not even talk to himself about his training at his own room, they can never have a moment of peace and they are never able to actually talk about certain things since its not appropriate for them; but what is inappropriate? They claim that some things might be inappropriate but maybe they are just over doing it. They are always trying to be in total control of everyone and there is always surveillance everywhere. As it was mentioned before everyoneââ¬â¢s life is planned out from the moment they are born. They dont get an opinion in almost anything. Not even their jobs, they just put each person into the job that they think is right for them and not the job that they actually want, in the ceremony of the twelves this is all decided then. They took away all the color so that everyone is the same and no one has something better than the others even though they may deserve it, thatââ¬â¢s why Jonas felt that something was wrong with the apple when he suddenly saw it turning red (he started seeing the color for the first time) when it was in midair. The debate on whether or not Jonasââ¬â¢s community is a utopia or a dystopia can run forever, each person has their own idea of normal. This novel was strongly filled with different ideas and each person can dismantle them and label the community as a utopia or a dystopia. Each person is different so the ideas will be different and also that there are people who would dismantle the story and the ideas differently. The two main ideas are whether or not its a utopia or a dystopia. Each of these different opinions is stated all throughout. janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-57879159496125328502020-03-22T17:08:00.001-07:002020-03-22T17:08:02.062-07:00Steroids Essays - Anabolic Steroids, Testosterone, Steroid Hormone Steroids Drugs have been used in sports almost as long as sports themselves have been around. The ancient Incas discovered that the ashes from burned leaves of the Coca tree gave the people great stores of energy, and made sleep unnecessary for hours or even days, it was later discovered to be the stimulant cocaine. They would take it before long hunts, battles, and even found it useful in ancient sport competitions. It wasn't until 1886 that the first drug-related death in sports occurred. A bicyclist took a mixture of cocaine and heroine, called the "speedball," and died from it. Little were the doctors aware the epidemic that would follow in the next century. Anabolic steroids, developed in the 1930's in Europe, are drugs that help to build new body tissue quickly, but with drastic side effects. Anabolic means the ability to promote body growth and repair body tissue. It comes from the Greek word anabolikos meaning "constructive." Steroids are basically made up of hormones. One woman train ing to make the 1984 US women's basketball team used them, her muscles started to bulge, her voice grew deeper, and she even had the beginnings of a mustache. These are all the usual symptoms of anabolic steroids. Steroids were not always used for sports, they started out the same way most drugs did, medicinal purposes. Victims of starvation and severe injury profited from it's ability to build new tissue quickly. They also helped prevent muscle tissue from withering in patients who had just had surgery. Steroids are used to treat Addison's disease. Anabolic steroids are drugs that come from hormones or from combinations of chemicals that achieve the same result as hormones. Hormones may be given to an individual in their natural state, or in a synthetic one. The synthetic state is sometimes more potent than the natural one. Testosterone and progesterone are hormones used in steroids, another kind comes from the adrenal glands, which secrete various necessary bodily chemicals. The s teroids themselves can be taken orally, as tablets or powders, and can also be liquids that are injected into the muscles. The steroids taken by athletes contain testosterone or chemicals that act in similar way to testosterone. Testosterone is found in men and women, but in women it is present in much smaller amounts, mainly because it is produced in the testicles in men. More than one hundred and twenty steroids are based on the hormone testosterone. There are many brand names, such as Durabolin, Winstrol, Pregnyl, and Anavar. Basically anabolic steroids control the bodily functions that are normally under control of the bodies natural testosterone. As well as turning women into men and men into manly men it has a stimulate effect on skeletal muscle mass, some visceral organs, the hemoglobin concentration, and the red blood cell number and mass. Of course, most people take anabolic steroids illegally to stimulate growth in muscle cells. Once a person is born, he/she will not grow anymore muscle cells throughout their life. So when muscle mass increases it is the individual cells growing in girth to compensate for either an increase in work, or the release of androgen hormones(found in all anabolic steroids.) Exercise alone can stimulate the girth of muscle cells to increase by anywhere from thirty to sixty percent. The presence of androgen hormones allows for even greater growth. Anabolic steroids act like our natural androgen hormones in that they stimulate anabolic metabolism in the muscles. Anabolic metabolism involves the buildup of larger molecules from smaller ones and includes all the constructive processes used to manufacture the substances needed for cellular growth and repair. As a result of steroids stimulating anabolic metabolism, muscles increase in size to a substantially greater size than they would have been if the individual only exercised. Doctors take different views on prescribing steroids. Most dislike the use of them in sports, and some will not prescribe them at all for use in sports. They see them as dangerous for healthy individuals, and the taking of drugs to get a winning edge they see as cheating. Others don't like steroids, but will prescribe them, knowing their patient, if not given them by their doctor, will get them from somewhere janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-57159229317257203952020-03-05T23:42:00.001-08:002020-03-05T23:42:02.193-08:00Walter Cannon essaysWalter Cannon essays Born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, on October 19, 1871, a child by the name of Walter Bradford Cannon would emerge into a world unlike the one he was to create. Caught up in the battle between traditionalists and Darwinists over the perceived conflict that was religion and science as a youngster, he would come to challenge the ideals of the Calvinist church. During his teen years, Cannon would break away from his family religion in search of his own answers within his independent judgment. Distinguishing himself academically within high school, Cannon was prepared to attend Harvard College in 1892. Four years after his initial enrollment to Harvard, he was accepted to Harvard Medical School by 1896. During his time in H.M.S., Cannon began his contributions to science as he investigated swallowing and stomach mobility with the use of x-rays. His research was published in the first American Journal of Physiology in 1898. By 1900 Walter had attained his medical degree. After graduation, Cannon joined the American Physiological Society and became the instructor in the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School. Soon after in 1902, he became an assistant professor of physiology and four years later would succeed Bowditch as the Professor of Physiology, becoming the chair of the department of which he would hold until 1942. In 1914, Cannon would serve as president of the American Physiological Society for two years and focused his studies on traumatic shock, writing Bodily Changes in Pain, Hunger, Fear, and Rage in 1915. Advancing to 1923, Cannon's Traumatic Shock postulated the causes of traumatic shock In the process of his research, he documented findings on the sympathetic nervous system as well as neurochemical transmission of nerve impulses. Cannon also discovered the adrenaline-like hormone sympathin and clarified the pathways of emotional responses which proved error to the James-Lange theory. ... janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-76446191152282864352020-02-18T15:06:00.001-08:002020-02-18T15:06:02.824-08:00The Europe history after 1st world war Research PaperThe Europe history after 1st world war - Research Paper Example During the 20th century there was sporadic social, cultural and economic change in Europe due to the industrial revolution that started in Britain during the 18th century and later spread to the whole world. The 2 world wars and a great economic depression controlled most of the first quarter of the 20th century2. The First World War was fought for 4 years, from the year 1914 to 1918. The war was fought between the entente powers that included the Belgium, France, Russia, Britain, Greece, Italy, Romania, and the United States of America against the Central powers which comprised of countries such as Germany, the Ottoman Empire, Austria, and Hungary3. The war claimed the lives of over 15 million civilians and military men. It is estimated that over 59 million military men were called to service during the war. Later on the great revolution in Russia destroyed the Transits Monarchy and replaced it with the Soviet Union. Additionally, the Ottoman Empire broke up forming separate nations and most of these nations had their boundaries re-drawn4. A treaty was written, known as the Treaty of Versailles. It marked the end of World War 1, but was harsh on the Germans, blaming them for the full responsibility of the war, hence imposed heavy sanctions on the country. High depts. Incurred in the First World War and loans given Germany caused great economic instability and havoc within Europe between the years 1920 to 1930. In the Soviet Union, people were dying of famine that had partly been contributed by Stalinââ¬â¢s regime. At the end of the 1st World War, the German economy suffered and this is because of the harsh conditions that were placed on it, by the treaty of Versailles, whose intention was to end the First World War. Hitler got into power in the year 1933, and begun his great campaign of building a great Germany. In the year 1929, the crash of Wall Street brought about the great depression that was experienced worldwide. To the mainstream media, Gangsta Rap is readily exploited for its commercial value as entertainment or news, but continues to be misused to demonize black males by the patriarchal norms of the culture in which it exists (hooks 1994). Black males have taken Gangsta Rap as a necessary means of male expression. However, hooks contends, "Without a doubt black males, young and old, must be held politically accountable for their sexism" because they are being "... forced to take the "heat" for encouraging, via their music, the hatred of and violence against women that is a central core of patriarchy". Gangsta Rap lives up to the expectations of the norm. 2Pacs love of Gangsta Rap did not spontaneously appear. It was the culmination of his childhood and the experiences he endured as a young man that had been bludgeoned by life as an adult. He was born into a black revolutionary family as the son of two members of the Black Panthers. His parents were never together after 2Pac was born and he lived with his mother and sister for all of his childhood. Their influence can be seen in one of 2Pac's earlier songs called "Brenda's Got a Baby". 2Pac writes, "Well let me show ya how it affects tha whole community. Now Brenda never really knew her moms and her dad was a junky, Went in debt to his arms, it's sad, Cause I bet Brenda doesn't even know, Just cause your in tha ghetto doesn't mean ya can't grow, But oh, that's a thought, my own revelation, Do whatever it takes ta resist tha temptation". 2Pac had not yet succumb to the black male stereotype and the song shines through with non-condescending sympathy and reason. 2Pac's childhood was based in poverty, yet he was drawn to books and read at length on sociological theory. He was able to gain acceptance to the Baltimore School of Arts. He did well in this environment where he developed his rap music and acting. Before he could complete his studies, his family moved and he was forced to drop out. This unfortunate move took a young man that was serious about his art and at the age of 17 threw him into the streets of Marin City, CA. He soon hooked up with the Digital Underground and appeared on two of their albums. His mentors were people like Shock-G, Ernest Dickerson, and director John Singleton. During the period of 1991 - 1993 he released two albums and appeared in 3 movies. By all appearances 2Pac was a successful artist, educated, and had escaped the streets and the mold of the patriarchal norm. However, something was changing and it was reflected in his altercations with law enforcement. He was arrested in 1992 for his involvement in a fight that resulted in the death of a six-year-old. In the summer of 1993 he assaulted director Allen Hughes and was sentenced to 15 days in jail. In October of 1993 he was arrested for shooting two off-duty police officers in Atlanta. The charges were later dropped. In November 1993 he was charged with sexually abusing a female fan. In 1994, he was found guilty of sexual assault. The day after the verdict was announced, he was attacked and shot while at a recording studio. Shakur was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison on February 7, 1995. Materials and Methods: 169 patients with localized prostate cancer who were performed robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy were included in the study between 2009-2011. Patients were divided into 2 groups. Patientsââ¬â¢ characteristics, preop and postop evaluation were recorded. Results: There were 111 and 58 patints in group 1 (with traction) and group 2 (without traction), respectively. Patientsââ¬â¢ ages, follow up time, body mass indexes (BMI), prostate spesific antigen (PSA) values, preop and postop Gleason score values, pathological stage, positive surgical margin rates and biochemical PSA reccurrence rates were evaluated. There was no statistically significant difference between groups for age, preop PSA values, BMI, preop and postop Gleason scores, positive surgical margin rates and biochemical reccurrence rates. There was significant difference between prostate weight, tumor volume and clinical stage between groups. ( Conclusions: Removing the specimen with traction during robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy does not cause positive surgical margin. The incision can be as small as possible for cosmetic sight. Introduction Robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP) has become the most preferred surgical technique for localized prostate cancer. One of the most important factor pointing out the oncologic success is the surgical margin status.(1) Positive surgical margin (PSM) status may be related both with the surgeon, surgical technique and disease burden. (1,2 ) Our aim was to evaluate the effect of traction, probably the cause of PSM, during the specimen removal. Ther are many studies comparing the PSM acording to techniques, pathologic findings and clinical stage but we found none acording the technique of specimen removal. (3) Materials and Methods 169 patients who were performed RALP for localized prostate cancer between 2009 and 2011 were included in this study. All the patients were evaluated and Ethic Committee permission were given for each. The reason why we planned this study was the patients with postoperative PSM (positive surgical margin) but no PSA (prostate spesific antigen) reccurrence. Patients were randomized as two groups, A and B, acording to their status of traction was done or not while removing the specmen. Traction can be defined as removing the specimen from a small incision that may let the specimen removed by traction. No traction can be defined as removing the traction from an incision larger than prostate that make easy removing the specimen without any difficulty. Student-t test was used for follow-up, age, BMI (body mass index), PSA, prostate weight and tumor volume. Chi-square test was used for Gleason grade, stage, SMI (surgical margin invasion) and BCR (biochemical reccurrence rates). All the values were calculated as mean and SD. SPSS 16 was used. Results Group A (traction group) had 111 patients while group B (no-traction group) had 58. There was statistically significant difference between groups for prostate weight, tumor volume and clinical stage. Age, BMI, preoperative PSA levels, biopsy Gleason score, prostatectomy Gleason score, pathological stage, SMI status and BCR were similar for both groups. Patientsââ¬â¢ preoperative and postoperative characteristics are summerized in table 1 and 2. Although there are pT0 patients in both groups we have to say that we have given no additional therapy like androgen deprivation therapy preoperatively. Discussion Nowadays robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is the main surgical technique for localized prostate cancer. In the United States 85% of radical prostatectomies are performed robotically. (4) Generally PSM rates after different techniques for radical prostatectomy seems to be equal but sometimes surgical technique may effect the rates.(5,6) Oncologic outcomes of robotic surgery are generally similar with laparoscopic and open surgery (7-10) although there are some other results suggesting that the rates are different for the techniques. (11-13) The well known object is that the PSM may be related with disease burden, surgeon and also the technique. Robotic surgery has some differences from laparoscopic surgery. The adventages of robotic surgery are related both with the patient and the surgeon. This provides a comfortable operation for the surgeon. In order to find out if traction may cause a PSM, we randomised the patients into two groups as traction or non-traction. We believe that traction may cause a damage on the prostate capsula and show a pseudopositive surgical margin. In our study PSM rates are similar in both groups. Higher tumor volume and stage can effect PSM rates. (2) Although traction group has higher tumor volume rates and lower clinical stage PSM rates are similar. Also prostatectomy Gleason scores are similar for both groups. All the operations were performed by the same person as PSM rates can differ among surgeons performance. Some outhors have described ââ¬Å" Capsular Incision Indexâ⬠to show the damages on the capsula that may cause pseudopositive surgical margin.(2). We beleive, because of the traction made by the fourth arm of the robot may cause pseudopositive surgical margin, pahologist must reveal that if there is a positive margin coloured with the ink they use, they must also see the capsula of the prostate. If no, this may not be really a positive margin. This is very important as sometimes may affect the extra t herapy options. In order not to give any unneccesssary treatment both the surgeon and the pathologist must be very careful as this may not only increase the morbidity but also the cost. Conclusion Surgical margin status after radical prostatectomy is an important topic. Surgical technique is important in order not to cause a positive surgical margin but pathlogical findings are maybe more important for the possible additional treatment. Removing the specimen with traction during robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy does not cause positive surgical margin. The incision can be as small as possible for cosmetic sight. Due to a change in patientsââ¬â¢ needs, the hours of operation need to be modified. à Several scheduling options are presented and a decision has to be made. Should this decision be made by a majority vote, or a consensus? Support your choice with à reasoning from the decision making section on page 98 of your GMC. I think that due to the time and hours of operation that it should be a majority vote for the reason or reasons outlined below: 1.Since there is only the matter of counting votes, decisions can be reached much more quickly with majority rule. Majority rule does not require the same level of interpersonal communication. It is a democratic process which ultimately comes down to simple mathematics. This method of decision-making, outside of registration, is often anonymous. The nature of the process, in many cases, allows individuals to maintain their privacy, as others cannot know with certainty, for whom or what a person has voted. A disadvantage of majority rule is the majorityââ¬â¢s ability to vote against the interests and preferences of those in the minority without those groups or individuals being heard or involved in the discussion. The realization of an imminent death is the first step that strikes fear into the heart of the victim. Shore is too far away, the person is too tired, and if rescue is not near, death is inescapable. Contrary to popular understanding, a drowning person is not easy to spot. People picture a drowning victim screaming or calling for help, but in actuality all his/her efforts are used to breathe, making calls for help impossible.Drowning is not the death most people envision it. It is a silent killer. Creeping up slowly, it takes its victims by surprise, and often before five minutes have passed, death has them in its cold, cruel clutches. This silent action is paralleled in Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens speaks of a woodman, personified as fate, and a farmer, who is used to picture dea th, working silently but purposefully towards the French Revolution, getting ready wood for scaffolds, guillotines and tumbrels. As well as portraying the silent nature of drowning, Dickens also uses this motif to bring out another aspect of the revolution. In A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens uses the motif of drowning to portray the stages of the revolutionariesââ¬â¢ attitudes towards their condition. ââ¬Å"The first step towards getting helped is realizing that you have a problem. â⬠(Anonymous) This well known quote clearly illustrates the first step of drowning. A man cannot save himself if he does not realize that he is in danger. When drowning becomes reality to its victims, their whole vision changes, and panic sets in. In A Tale of Two Cities, the peasantââ¬â¢s vision changed as they realized that if they did not act right away, they would die as victims of a tyrannical system. If this fact in itself did not move the peasants into action, it was the fact that not only them, but their children and their childrenââ¬â¢s children would perish, smothered under the iron fist of the aristocracy. Their vision became visions of desperate people, as drowning people. This outlook was in many ways created and helped along by Monsieur and Madame Defarge. They showed the shrunken, wasted Doctor Manette to the Jacques, in order to change the way they looked at things and strike fear of their condition into their hearts. Dickens also uses the motif of drowning very strongly in the personal lives of his characters.A quote found on page 255 reads, ââ¬Å"All this was seen in a moment, as the vision of a drowning man. â⬠This quote refers us back to the Manetteââ¬â¢s, where Jarvis Lorry reveals the terrible grindstone scene to the horrified Doctor. Doctor Manetteââ¬â¢s vision changed at that moment as well, realising that death, though not for himself, was sure for Lucieââ¬â¢s husband if immediate action was not taken. When a drowning person obtai ns the vision that he or she is dying, panic takes control over both mind and body. From panic stems desperation and a desperate man is someone who will do anything to change his situation.A drowning man no longer thinks about right and wrong, about what morals he practices, or what values he ought to follow. One thought consumes his mind, and that is to save himself. The means used to achieve deliverance does not matter, nor does the suffering person stop to consider if he is harming another in saving himself. In the novel, this is illustrated by the conflict between Miss Pross and Madame Defarge; ââ¬Å". . . Miss Pross . . . held her round the waist, and clung to her with more than the hold of a drowning woman,â⬠(Dickens 357).This situation clearly reminds the reader of the desperate circumstances in which the peasants found themselves. Just as Miss Prossââ¬â¢ hold on Madame Defarge was a matter of life or death, so the actions of revolutionaries were determining their e nd; a better future for all peasants, or a continuation of oppression from the ancien regime. In the above quote Dickens also speaks about the hold of a drowning person. A rescuer must always be careful when swimming up to such a person, because in panic, the victim may grab hold of him/her so tightly that both perish. In the same way, the revolutionaries harmed others while trying to save themselves. In the senseless slaughter of those guilty and innocent alike, the revolutionaries drowned themselves along with their victims in a pool of immorality and revenge. For, even though they bettered their physical condition and brightened the future for their children, their conscience was passed over and ignored. Like a drowning man who before the actual act of death becomes unconscious, so the consciences of the revolutionaries were pushed away until they were silenced, no longer able to warn against the upcoming spiritual death. Death is the final outcome. If a person has drowned, death h as come to claim this person and there is no longer any chance of being rescued. In A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens speaks of the gaoler of Charles Darnay, his description being, ââ¬Å". . . this gaoler was so unwholesomely bloated, both in face and person, as to look like a man who had been drowned and filled with water,â⬠(Dickens 249). This man seems to point to all the revolutionaries, not in the physical description, but in a spiritual sense. The consciences of the revolutionaries have been drowned, silenced forever, and the people themselves have been filled with thoughts only of bloodthirsty revenge. The picture of a drowned man is not a pleasant one. The death is most often an agonizingly conscious one, causing the expression to be one twisted in agony, the horrified expression of one without hope of survival. The lack of oxygen causes the skin to turn a sickly blue, and the water soaks into the pores and causes the persons face to be swollen and bloated. Ultimately, the personââ¬â¢s appearance is so altered that it is usually difficult, if not impossible to identify the person from the way they looked before.Similarly, the revolutionaries were not a pretty picture in the way that they cared nothing for their fellow man and executed any who seemed to oppose them callously, without proof or proper trial. Proof of this callousness can be found in the example of the little seamstress towards the end of the novel, a representation of thousands of innocent victims sent to the guillotine. We read of how the women knitting below the scaffold counted the severed heads calmly, not in the least disturbed at the horrific amount of bloodshed occurring right before their eyes. The wood-sawyer is another prime example of the uncaring attitude of the peasants when he talks flippantly to Lucie of the guillotine; ââ¬Å". . . Loo, loo, loo! And off her head comes! Now a child. Tickle, tickle; Pickle, pickle! And off its head comes. All the family! â⬠(Dickens , 341). We are horrified as we read of the Jacques gleefully talking about the way they enjoy seeing a woman with blonde hair and blue eyes being guillotined, and we are even more appalled when they speak with eager anticipation at the thought of seeing Lucieââ¬â¢s pretty child put to death.Throughout all these examples we can see that Dickens has brought the motif of drowning to a close and the final outcome, death of the revolutionaryââ¬â¢s morality, has been achieved. At the end of the novel, A Tale of Two Cites, the motif of drowning has come full circle. We read of how the peasantââ¬â¢s desperate situation causes their vision to be that of drowning people as they realize that death is imminent. Dickens moves on to portray the panic that causes morality to be ignored in the frantic attempt to preserve oneââ¬â¢s own life.Dickens shows that drowning people will do anything to save themselves, even drown their rescuer if they feel it will improve their own condition. In the same way the revolutionaries brutally disposed of any that seemingly hindered their desperate attempt to break their chains of oppression. The plot lines of the characters also vividly portray the way in which the consciences of certain characters are silenced, and the way in which no other thought than revenge is allowed into the minds of the revolutionaries. And then finally, death, the end of all morality. The guiding principles of mankind were destroyed as the revolutionaries thirst for bloodshed did not abate, but instead grew more intense, as each day they longed for more heads to be added to the ever growing number. The motif of drowning is used very powerfully by Charles Dickens, and is employed in a way that effectively portrays the desperate position of the revolutionaries. The way in which Dickens uses this motif clearly parallels the changing attitudes of the revolutionaries, giving us a better understanding of them. janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-68242442949014116372020-01-02T07:28:00.001-08:002020-01-02T07:28:04.024-08:00Beowulf And The Epic Hero - 1407 Words In the epic hero poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf, is a prideful, boastful and extremely strong individual. He is faced with a few tasks during the course of the poem; the first of which is fighting and killing an evil, dangerous and disgusting creature, named Grendel, which terrorized the town of Herot. Soon after that, Grendelââ¬â¢s devious mother ââ¬Å"the she-wolf,â⬠attacks Beowulf and the town forcing Beowulf to fight her off as well. After the mother-son duo, Beowulf is then faced with the biggest task of his existence, both literally and figuratively. During each of these battles Beowulf fights and kills these creatures in different ways with different weapons and different tactics. He also changes during each fight, and at the end of the poem is quit a different man. How does he manage to fight each creature off and what kind of tactics did he use? Well thatââ¬â¢s a great question, let me elaborate. First and foremost, Beowulf is a very strong warrior; he hails from the land of the Geats and is their best soldier. He is what many would call a thrill seeker and is drawn to danger, adventure but most of glory. Beowulf sets off in search of such glory and lets the seas take him where it may; this leads him to the town of Herot. Once there he is given a great opportunity by the great King Hrothgar, to prove his strength and obtain much glory. The task is to kill the terrible creature that haunts the town night after night, a creature named Grendel. Role overlap occurs when tasks can be performed by various members of a team and is an importa nt feature of successful teams. It ensures the smooth operation of the team because members can easily fill in for each other (Guadine Lamb, 2015). Answer: Introduction Strategic position can be understood as positioning of a company in future considering changing environment and systematic positioning realization (Abushova, Burova and Suloeva 2016). The objective of the paper is to conduct strategic position analysis of Woolworth Limited along with describing the financial conditions and strategic analysis of the company. Moreover, the report also intends to evaluate the ethics, values and social responsibilities of the company in order to recognize the issues faced by the company. Based on such issues certain recommended actions will be provided for improvement of Woolworths Limiteds financial and strategic position. This will also pose implications and certain suggestions for the future study. Company Background Woolworths Limited is positioned as an Australian based company that is involved in retail business operations. Business segments of the company includes Australian petrol and food segment, Endeavor drinks group, BIGW, New Zealand supermarkets and Hotels(Akbar and Ahsan 2014). The Australian petrol and food segment is involved in procurement petroleum and food products for resale to the Australian consumers. The New Zealand supermarket is centered on acquiring food and liquor products resale to the New Zealand consumers (Van Niekerk 2015). The hotel segment is involved with provision of a segment of hospitality and leisure services encompassing alcohol and food, entertainment, accommodation along with gaming within Australia. The brands of WoolworthsLimited encompass Dan Murphys, BWS and Woolworths. The New Zealand food segment is associated with acquiring along with resale of food and drinks to all its consumers. The company has its business operations in 84 countdown supermarkets a nd it is involved with wholesale operations (Amaldoss, Desai and Shin 2015). Analyzed Issues Financial Conditions of Woolworths While carrying out quantitative analysis of Woolworth Companys financial position, balance sheet along with profit and loss statement of the company facilitated in analyzing whether the performance has resulted in negative and positive loss/gain for the company (Balasubramanian, Bhattacharya and Krishnan 2015). The financial situation analysis of the company revealed that Woolworths Company is under-performing over the past financial year. This might be attributed within the slide in the first quarter sales all through the business as per the records of Australian stock exchange. From the financial condition investigation of the company, it is revealed that there are mixed results over a five-year duration. This might bring in some poor results in the financial year as losses are associated with Masters joint venture along with increased competition within the core liquor and food business initiating to take hold (Barney and Hesterly 2015). Poor financial performance of Woolworths Li mited resulted in drop of share price drastically from $27.87 to $23.60 just after four days. From the profit and loss statement analysis of the company it is gathered that the operating expenses decreased from 5% to 3% in the upcoming years. Unfortunately, because of the poor revenue figures in the year 2017, certain increased expenses cost although trending lower led to a soft EBIT figure of $3,350,000 (Bayne, Schepis and Purchase 2017). Values, Ethics and Social Responsibility Woolworths Limited is dealing with issues associated with its social responsibility strategies. Taking into account the food waste it is observed that their private standards along with in-store practices generates considerable food waste in stores (Cheng, Green and Ko 2014). The managers of the company are struggling to make sure that any surplus vegetables and fruits are disposed in the bin and is donated within food rescue companies. The company is also dealing with the concern of deforestation taking place from the high impact commodities for its own brand products that includes timber, palm oil, paper, pulp along with packaging. The company focuses on setting goals for decreasing its carbon emissions by 10% in the upcoming years (Das Nair and Dube 2017). The ethical audit indicated that the company is involved in unethical practices, child labor use and ingredients while a staff of the organization was all edged of taking kickbacks. From this scandal it is observed that Woolwort hsLimiteddid not comply with policies on work conditions, pay and corruption. It is also revealed that some of its suppliers was involved in the acts of corruption and bribery and was also involved in falsifying all its records and documents (Feigin 2016). Evaluation of Identified Issues Financial Conditions and Analysis In order to analyse the financial condition of Woolworths, the financial figures of the previous two years have been taken into consideration. The financial data of the last two years depict that the firm is improving its performance in terms of profitability, since the profit level of the organisation has increased from ($1,234.80) in 2016 to $1,533.50 in 2017 (Frederick Rose, Hawryszkiewycz and Kang 2014). On the other hand, the liquidity position of the business has not been able to match with the industrial average. This could be better illustrated with the help of quick ratio, which helps in evaluating the ability of a firm to meet current obligations with short-term asset base. From the financial condition investigation of the company, it is revealed that there are mixed results over a five-year duration that might bring in some poor results in the financial year as losses associated with Masters joint venture along with increased competition within the core liquor and food busi ness initiating to take hold (Hubbard, Rice and Galvin 2014). Particulars Details 2016 2017 Current assets A $7,227 $6,994.20 Inventories B $4,558.50 $4,080.40 Current liabilities C $8,992.70 $8,824.20 Quick ratio (A-B)/C 0.30 0.33 In this case, the ideal industrial standard is considered as 1 and the ratio is quite below the industrial average, which denotes that Woolworths is suffering from cash flow problems. Such issue might result in insolvency in future, which might reduce its debt paying capacity (Hubbard, Rice and Galvin 2014). If the organisation could not pay such debt, it would need to borrow money that would influence its profitability level. With such lower revenue, it would not be able to fetch higher returns to its investors due to fall in share price in the market. As a result, the investors might not be willing to invest in the shares of the organisation. However, it is to be borne in mind that their numerous revenue streams for Woolworths, which would help in ensuring consistency in cash flow (Johnston et al.2017). In addition, Woolworths is involved in operating retail stores, consumer electronics outlets and departmental stores, which are dependent mainly on cash sales. As a result, the organisation has a fixed source of cash flow flowing into the organisation. In addition, the organisation has financial priorities, as it acts on its portfolio for maximising the wealth of the shareholders. Furthermore, it has formulated a new strategy, in which it has planned to open 39 new supermarkets, which would raise its income and profit levels. With such higher growth, the organisation would be able to receive greater amount of dividend to its shareholders (Karmanov et al. 2016). However, if the stores could not work as per the planning, it might have adverse impact on the financial performance of the organisation. Ethics, Values and Social Responsibility It is of utmost significance for each organisation to assure ethics and values with its stakeholders for maintaining effective relationship with them. The values and ethics explain the primary framework within which all the firms are required to operate (Kilroy and Schneider 2017). Hence, it is significant for Woolworths Limited to assure ethics and values, which implies that it would follow the primary guidelines and business rules as well as of the society. Woolworths ensures ethics and values of its suppliers by undertaking efforts in enhancing the social and environmental practices with them. Due care is exercised in order to assure that it is involved in working regularly with the suppliers for increasing their satisfaction level. The intention is to obtain timely delivery of the raw materials. The firm is involved in providing clear and understandable directions to the purchasing staffs in order to encourage and motivate them (Morioka, Evans and de Carvalho 2016). In addition, it needs to maintain its brand level by ensuring that its actions do not influence its corporate reputation and image of its individual brands. Effective working conditions are provided to the staffs for safeguarding the basic human rights along with ensuring overall protection of the surrounding environment. The company is involved in functioning maturely the primary guidelines of the society. For assuring the continuing success of the business, it is significant to maintain the ethical and moral standards along with maintaining its reputation. Woolworths is involved in assuring labour right regulation where the workers are free to select the employment of their choice(Parkinson 2016). They are not compelled to work in the company; instead, they could leave the organisation at the time they wish. A reasonable notice is to be provided on the part of the staffs before they decide to leave the organisation. Along with this, the staffs could form trade unions and they could involve in collective bargaining with the management of the organisation over their problem areas. The employer openly accepts the trade union activities in the organisation (Thorlakson, Hainmueller and Lambin 2018). Along with this, the organisation maintains sustainability by maintaining effective ethical practices. It is a serious challenge for Woolworths to maintain the strong employee base present in Australia and New Zealand (Sewell, Mason and Venter 2017). In addition, the company is devoted in meeting the targets along with delivering quality products and services to its customers. Thus, it could be stated that Woolworths has maintained its social responsibility in an effective manner. Recommended Solutions Through observing the issues faced by Woolworths Limited regarding ethics, social responsibility and maintaining efficient financial position, certain effective recommendationsare provided to the company. From evaluation of financial and social responsibility strategy it is gathered that despite of the companys successful corporate strategy as the basis of its major operations, there are some major areas where the process is lacking. Certain effective recommendations are explained below: There must be a performance measurement along with control process existing within the sustainable growth strategy. A suitable performance evaluation at different stages alongwith regular feedback on performance might facilitate in decreasing gaps within the level along with efficient decision for addressing objectives. This must also consider actual attainment of such objectives. For maintaining effective social responsibility, the company is recommended to inform all its stakeholders regarding the strategy. In its financial planning the management must be properly communicated. This is for the reason that such information is simply grasped by the concernedparties and makes it simpler for the employees for contributing towards attainment of company strategy. Woolworths is provided with recommendations regarding increasing online sales aggressively to more than 20% of overall Australian sales through regular investment within innovative digital development. This is deemed to offer a highly connected retail experience to all the consumers. This also involves focusing on personalization and digital accessibility through improving mobile platform and target communications. The company is also recommended to increase its operational efficiencies along with savings associated with water, energy and waste. This must be made possible with increased focus on developing green stores along with integrating sustainability within its new office within Melbourne. Partnering with the suppliers to ensure positive ethical, social along with environment change beyond compliance. Woolworths Limited is recommended to design products with sustainability attributes and driving responsible sourcing strategies for all the major commodities that includes cellulose, cotton, leather, timber and wool. The company is also contusing to partner with major charity companies to make certain difference along with offering opportunities for the teams to be associated with supporting local communities. Woolworths must focus on implementing a hygiene, disposal along with recycling program in which they can re-use packaging for various purposes along with implementing hygiene for enhancing cleanliness within the surrounding. In return it can also enhance the companys public image along with generating high exposures due to a good cause. Future Study The current paper focused on analyzing the strategic position of Woolworths Company considering the financial situation analysis along with social responsibility evaluation of the company. Despite of having certain implications, the report did not cover evaluation of some factors for strategic position analysis of the company. Considering the same, the future study will focus on evaluating the industry and competitive evaluation along with analysis of diversities strategies (Tan and Carrillo 2017). This indicates that evaluation of multi business companies. The future study will also focus on corporate social responsibility that can describe a situation where an organization attains sustainable development not just in the economic dimension but also within environmental and social dimension. The paper will also reveal that the companys ethical policies that includes analysis of its commitment towards implementing and sustaining an efficient program of corporate social responsibility which includes social and environmental responsibilities. The future study will also recognize that success is not possible to be measured in consideration to growth and profit along with the ways in which Woolworths Community Group. This will be considered in the manner through which it is possible to decrease the environmental impact. It I also believed that associating the companys financial performance with non-financial segment that can increase value for the stakeholders and the members. Conclusion The objective of the paper is to conduct strategic position analysis of Woolworth Limited along with describing the financial conditions and analysis of the company. Based on such issues certain recommended actions will be provided for improvement of Woolworths Limiteds financial and strategic position. It is gathered from the paper that while carrying out quantitative analysis of Woolworth Companys financial position, balance sheet along with profit and loss statement of the company facilitated in analyzing whether the performance has resulted in negative and positive loss/gain for the company. For marinating effective social responsibility, the company is recommended to inform all its stakeholders regarding the strategy. The Iroquois have greatly contributed to society through initiating the Iroquois confederacy also called the Iroquois League formed in 1570. The North American confederacy consists of five nations called: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca, which resided in what is now known as Upstate New York. These tribes joined together as the ââ¬Å" 5 civilized tribesâ⬠for strength and survival. Between 1715 1722, a tribe called Tuscaroras, who had moved North from California, were formally admitted into the confederacy, as the sixth tribe, but they were non-voting members, but were placed un der the protection of the Confederacy. (Colden, 1973) The Iroquois people were considered a hunter and gatherer society, they had to find and grow all their own food. In the early Iroquois stage the Iroquois people would grow maize and gather fish in the summer, but in the winter they would only hunt, these were there main sources of food. Later in the Iroquois stage there was an abundant source of agriculture farming, and they were finally able to grow corn, beans, and squash, which made up eighty percent of their daily diet. (Ali Behan, 2010) When trading among bands the Iroquois would use wampumââ¬â¢s, traditional, sacred shell beads as a type of currency. The Iroquois: People of the Longhouse Essay Body Paragraphs The Europeans realized the importance of wampumââ¬â¢s to the Iroquois and used it as a medium of exchange. Initially wampumââ¬â¢s were used as a form of documenting important events. The Iroquois people had a lot of trade tools but also were able to obtain guns and ammunition through fur trade with the Europeans. (Snyderman, 1961) The Iroquois families built longhouses made of logs, which were divided into several compartments; this is how they acquired their name ââ¬Å" People of the Longhouseâ⬠. Each family was in a separate compartment and each longhouse was surrounded in fort like form keeping their enemies afar. Colden 1973) The tribes picked areas surrounding Lake Ontario to live on; thus having lots of lakes and rivers to fish, abundant sources of thick wood, and land that was fertile enough to farm on. Summers were long, dry and hot, while winters were cold enough resulting in death. There were also abundant sources of trees to cut down to build shelter. The socia l structure of Iroquois tribes was based on matrilineal principles, as women owned all property and determined kinship. After marriage, men would move into the womenââ¬â¢s longhouse, usually along with her parents. Their children would become members of the womenââ¬â¢s clan. (Baskin, 1982) Situation/ Description A problem that came from the European influence on the Iroquois was alcoholism. Seventeen century Iroquois used alcohol for its ââ¬Å"hallucinogenic propertiesâ⬠and then proceeded to use it as a ââ¬Å"way of communicating with the supernaturalâ⬠. (Conrad, 1999) As the people of these tribes realized what alcohol could help them accomplish, the Iroquois people began to drink more, becoming dependent on it, and resulting in their alcohol addictions. As the years went on, the emphasis of alcohol shifted to using it as a release. This would reduce anxiety and liberate aggression (Conrad, 1999). Alcoholism and substance abuse is still seen profoundly in the Iro quois nations. There were also issues of suicide in the Iroquois nations most commonly during the eighteen and nineteen century. These were hard times of change for the Iroquois, dealing with loss of lands, scarcity of game. They changed from a hunting and gathering society to an agricultural society. The Iroquois also believed that each person is given an allotted life span, and when a person believed his time was up and a natural death could not happen it was time for them to take their own life. The primary and very painful method of committing suicide was through the ingestion of the root of the water hemlock. This method became a tradition of the Iroquois tribe. (Fenton, 1986) The main forms of environmental issues included the activities of clearing and cutting down forests for new agriculture fields. This occurred primarily when their prior land was nutrient depleted. The Iroquois allied with the British and the French in the 1600 and 1700s, but also fought with them continuo usly over land issues. When the Europeans arrived in the area around the New York State in the early seventeenth century they became important trading partners to the Iroquois. The expansion of European settlement upset the Iroquoisââ¬â¢ economic balance and forced confinement of the Iroquois clans to reservations. This also forced them to adapt to a traditional economic system. The loss of their cultural identity proved to be intolerable to these proud people. The Iroquois were also plagued by epidemics of disease, including the smallpox, brought by the Europeans resulting in the depopulation of the Iroquois. It then became harder for the Indians to keep the seats of the Confederacy of the grand council filled. The consequences were the confederacy continued to remain a symbolic system, but the operating confederacy had to change their policies and resort to other leaders (Colden, 1973). The French and Iroquois wars were conflicts fought in the late seventeenth century in Easter n N. America, these wars were commonly known as Beaver Wars. The Iroquois wanted to expand their territory and also take control over the fur trade. The Five Nations banned together lead by the Mohawk tribe, who had then became known as the leader of five nations, against one of their rivals, the Algonquin tribes. In the history of North America, these wars are known to be one of the bloodiest series of disputes. The French then decided they needed the Iroquois as allies against the English invasions, after the Iroquois lost their Dutch allies. Finally in 1698 the Iroquois filed a suit for peace finishing the wars. The Iroquois and French then signed the 1701 Grande Paix (Great Peace) agreement allowing refugees back onto their land. Aquila, 1983) Options/ Outcomes There are said to be 125000 Iroquois people still living in seventeen scattered communities, in the United States and Canada, primarily in Ontario, Quebec, and New York. These people are still dealing with the problems of their ancestors. The main issue they face today is still land. After the American Revolution, which resulted in the division of the Iroquois, an international border separated them. Many projects came about that did not benefit the Iroquois such as the development of highways, power lines, railroads, etc. resulting in the loss of land. There were also many land sales that deteriorated their territory quickly. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) Today the Iroquois maintain strong links to each other even though they live miles from each other. They do this through family, political, and religious beliefs. Each community now has their own government, and their main chiefs still meet, as the Iroquois confederacy, to stay independent from the US or Canadian controls. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) Their society has changed immensely in the way they live. They no longer live in longhouses even though they can be still found on some reservations. Instead they have updated into modern living, and li ve in framed houses or trailers, but are still situated on reservations. Their communities have now taken the look of any small community including shops, libraries, nursing homes, restaurants, etc. Some communities have built culture centers and museums to show their ancestors histories. These show how far they have come as a community, and all the obstacles they had to face. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) One major problem seen on the majority of reservations is the standard of living. It is particularly lower on reservations compared to the white communities surrounding them. Although many of these Iroquois are wage workers, many of them are on welfare, causing unemployment to be a serious problem. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) To proceed in a positive way, I believe the Iroquois need to come to an agreement and work with the ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠people they fought with so many years ago. Doing so could provide them and their future Iroquois with more opportunities and start modern tra ditions that relate more closely with todayââ¬â¢s societies. Still allowing them to pass down their stories and many obstacles to all future Iroquois and keeping cultural traditions as all modern cultures do. Conclusion/ Future The Iroquois culture remains interesting and questionable. It will be interesting to see how the present and future Iroquois will relate and act, with respect to their ancestors, and how they will be raised. After many centuries of unresolved land issues, is there any way to fix these problems and live as one environment, to give every community equal chances. Will they follow the path of their ancestors and continue to fight. One of the most fascinating things about the Iroquois is the fact that they are a matrilineal society will they ever adapt to the North American society where it is said that men are in main control. As a society, we must wait and let the world unfold and hopefully begin to answer our many questions. Work Cited Aquila, R. (1983). These approaches include the behavioral, and psychoanalytical. A better look at each of these approaches would allow you to view both the positive and negative elements of both as well as enabling you to see the differences and similarities among them. Originating from the work of John B. Watson the behavioral approach is based on the belief that behavior is learned, thus all behavior can be unlearned and new behaviors learned in its place.(funderstanding.com/behaviorism.cfm) Behaviorism is concerned primarily with the observable and measurable aspects of human behavior. Behaviorists believe only observable and verifiable events can be accurately researched with strict scientific rigor and dont explore an individuals thoughts, feelings, dreams, or past experiences. Focusing on behavior, enables researchers to learn that careful description of what constitutes desired behavior is necessary for reinforcing it. Its greatest strength is that it demands specific identification of action, rather than relying on concepts that are subject to extensive interpretation and impossible to verify scientifically. Like any psychological method, the behaviorist approach has its critics. Some argue that just studying human behavior isnt fully studying human psychology due to the fact that they have failed to study the complexity of the human mind and human nature. Others feel behaviorists also portray free will as a petty influence on humans compared to outside forces in the environment. Psychoanalysts argue that by failing to study the unconscious, a characteristic of the behavioral approach, they are leaving out what is most interesting and unique about human beings. Perhaps the greatest weakness of this approach is the ethical consequences of behaviorism. Part-time jobs can be a way to manage an employment gap while you figure out your next career move, or it can be a way to test the waters in a particular field, or it might be a side hustle to make more money. The flexibility of a part-time job is usually the best part. So what are the top jobs for 2018 if youââ¬â¢re looking for a part-time gig? Letââ¬â¢s explore 5 that are worth exploring.1. Fitness InstructorWe live in a fitness-crazed world right now, with debates raging about CrossFit vs. SoulCycle or whether you really need to build an American Ninja Warrior gym in your backyard. But for most of us, fitness comes from our local gyms and community classes. Thatââ¬â¢s where fitness trainers and instructors enter the picture. These teachers lead classes in various types of fitness techniques (like yoga Zumba, or aerobics), or act as per sonal trainers on a more limited or one-to-one basis to help clients build fitness or lose weight. Fitness trainers can typically make their own schedules, scheduling classes or client appointments as they prefer, making it a solid part-time opportunity. What youââ¬â¢ll need: First and foremost, you should be pretty fit yourself, and also knowledgeable about anatomy, physiology, and safety. Trainers and instructors who specialize in a particular area (like yoga) often undergo advanced training, as well. Thereââ¬â¢s typically no minimum degree necessary to be a fitness instructor, but many employers are starting to prefer an associateââ¬â¢s degree in kinesiology (or a similar field), plus certification by an accredited training program. What it pays: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), fitness trainers and instructors make a median annual salary of $38,160 (full-time), or $18.34 per hour. This can vary depending on your hours and your specialty. For more on how to snag fitness jobs:How to Become an Athletic Trainer2. Registered NurseIf youââ¬â¢re looking for a flexible job in the healthcare field, you might want to consider nursing. Registered nurses (RNs) coordinate and provide direct patient care, assess patient condition, record patientsââ¬â¢ medical data, administer treatments and medication as prescribed by a physician, develop treatment plans, operate and monitor medical equipment, perform diagnostic tests, and educate patients and their families on follow-up care. Nurses can be found in any facility that offers healthcare, including hospitals, schools doctorsââ¬â¢ offices, home services, nursing homes, clinics, or health-focused government agencies. But is nursing really a part-time field, you ask? The short answer: it can be. Once youââ¬â¢ve got your nursing degree and your certification, there are nursing jobs that let you set your own hours, or work on short-term assignments. One major example is travel nursing, wh ere you can accept temporary or part-time gigs away from home, setting your own work agenda. What youââ¬â¢ll need: RNs typically hold a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in nursing (BSN), an associateââ¬â¢s degree in nursing (ADN), or a certificate from an accredited nursing program. Discrepancies in official statistics ââ¬â estimate of underground economy can also be done by comparing the statistics in national accounting. Ideally, total income must be equal to total final expenditures. If there is an excess of expenditures over incomes, this indicates the size the underground economy. This is based on a common sense that one cannot spend more than one earns. So the extra money that was spent is assumed to have come in the underground economy in the discrepancies in official statistics approach. Another estimate that can be done using discrepancies in official statistics is to check labor statistics. A decline in formal employment or labor participation indicates that the number of people in underground economy is increasing as workers are migrating from formal to informal employment. c. Monetary approaches ââ¬â the monetary approach recognizes that underground economy transacts only in cash to avoid paper trail that could detect and trace their illegal activities. The extent of the size of the underground economy can be estimated by analyzing the money supply (composed of cash and bank deposits) whether it has increased or decreased. An increase in money supply without the reported transactions or any visible economic activities indicate the existence of an underground economy. The value of the underground economy can then be extrapolated by comparing the value of money supply (cash on hand and bank deposits) to reported transactions in a given economy. The discrepancy between the value of money supply and reported transactions will give an estimate of the size of underground janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-69988926537576560902019-11-19T12:40:00.001-08:002019-11-19T12:40:05.527-08:00West antarctic ice sheet Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 wordsWest antarctic ice sheet - Research Paper Example The irony is that the human species has only one earth to live on and in case the environment of earth degrades beyond a certain level, it could positively jeopardize the very survival of the human species. The thing that needs to be understood is that environment stands to be a closely interconnected and integrated system, and it relies for its well being on a range of biological, geological, geographical and physical systems and features like animal and plant species, weather systems, water currents, atmospheric phenomena, water bodies, mountain ranges, air currents, glaciers, ice sheets, etc (Johnson 167). In that context, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet stands to be an important constituent of and a major determinant of the environmental health in the current times. Varied experts and research groups are urgently pointing to the fact that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is one of the Earthââ¬â¢s salient ice sheets, could eventually collapse going by the augmenting pace of glo bal warming, thereby leading to drastic climatic and environmental changes (Plimer 9). Simply speaking, an ice sheet happens to be a large mass of glacial land ice with a span of more than fifty thousand square kilometers (Allaby 79). During the ice age, many important ice shields covered large expanses of land in North America, Europe and varied other parts of the world. However, in the current times there are only two surviving ice sheets that are the Greenland ice sheet and the Antarctic ice sheet (Allaby 79). Ice sheets are formed only in those areas where the snow accumulated during the winters does not totally melt during the summers (Allaby 79). Over a long period of time spanning across thousands of years, this snow gives way to large masses of ice which further get compressed and packed as the new snow presses the snow from previous years (Allaby 80). One important thing janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075892969615788319.post-41954684998282560432019-11-17T01:12:00.001-08:002019-11-17T01:12:09.271-08:00An Ironic Editorial Cartoon Essay Example for Free An Ironic Editorial Cartoon Essay ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s hope the asteroidââ¬â¢s impact is confined to the subprime mortgage area. â⬠These are the words spoken among several dinosaurs as a large asteroid is headed towards earth. Or, more accurately, they are the words of the dinosaurs within the frame of Tim Tolesââ¬â¢ biting editorial cartoon. Upon first viewing, the cartoon does provoke immediate laughter. Then, when you stop to let the themes of the cartoon sink in you realize that the humor is quite dark and ominous and, more importantly, it is quite accurate. For those not familiar with the symbolism, there is an unproven theory that asserts dinosaurs may have been rendered extinct due to an asteroid hitting the earth. The reason all dinosaurs were rendered extinct was due to the asteroid having a significant change on the earthââ¬â¢s climate and environment. That is, the asteroid possessed a ripple effect that went far beyond the exact area where the asteroid landed. The symbolism presented here ties in with the subprime mortgage crisis in a manner that is both obvious and outright chilling. The weight of the claims presented in the argument makes logical sense. It simply infers that economic problems will have a major ripple effect. That is, the economic woes of those affected by the subprime crisis will carry over into other aspects of the economy. As a result, even those who may previously have had nothing to do with the subprime crisis will be negatively impacted. (In essence, the intended audience is the entire population of the nation) After all, we are all plugged into the same economy. If one area is hurting, it will invariably drag down others. This is clearly an interpretation based on implication and the claim is obviously apparent in the words used. And, yes, such assumptions are warranted as by the time the cartoon appeared the ripple effect of the crisis has lead to a huge federal bailout This is not a notion that is arrived at on the basis of speculation and alarmism. It is based on simple math and the law of cause and effect. If someoneââ¬â¢s home suffers from a foreclosure then the individual will find himself in an extremely disadvantageous financial position. Clearly, such an individual would have to make numerous ââ¬Å"cut backsâ⬠on purchasing decisions and this means less money will flow into the economy. Such actions have negative effects on profits in various companies and hurt stock values. If stock values are reduced then the net worth of investors (many of which rely on their investment during their retirement years) will reduce. Then, there is also the huge problem of massive foreclosures over-saturating the real estate market. This has the negative effect of ruining equity on real estate throughout the nation. Further problems arise as the economy declines and credit dries up. This can lead to ââ¬Å"bank runsâ⬠where customers opt to pull money out of their banks for fear they may lose their savings if the bank goes under. So, yes, just like the horrible ripple effect the asteroid had on the dinosaurs, the subprime crisis is one that affects the whole world as opposed to any one, single contained area. Of course, prior to the asteroid landing, the dinosaurs had no idea how serious the problem would be. They saw it coming but did not expect it to possess such a ripple effect. The dinosaurââ¬â¢s predicament is woefully similar to the predicament facing the economic landscape now that the subprime crisis has reeled out of control. As such, this cartoon is serious call to action and it is made with the intended goal of motivating the public to be ready for the serious ramifications of the subprime crisis. Now, when it comes to the ability to critique the effectiveness of the cartoon we must look at the sum of its parts. Particularly, is imagery also needed to effectively convey the information presented in the cartoon? Of course, it is possible to convey the same information and sentiment. Granted, the words in the cartoon would obviously have to be expanded upon in order to provide the proper context to make sense. However, the biting humor of the cartoon would needlessly be eliminated and replaced by exposition and explanation.. Such an approach would work quite effectively but it would not possess the same power of the cartoon. That is, the cartoon works on a number of levels because it combines visual imagery with ironic wording. In terms of the specific words within the cartoon, however, the presence of the words without the imagery would make little sense since they would be out of context without the presence of the dinosaurs. Now, if one were to keep the image and remove the wording the end result would be disastrous. A visual image of dinosaurs looking up at the sky and seeing an asteroid would convey the concept that an asteroid may have killed them, but it does nothing to promote the ironic notion that the subprime mortgage crisis can cause a similar ripple effect. In short, the value of the cartoon is basically worthless without the presence of the ironic wording. After all, if you were to remove the words from the cartoon would you be able to guess that its subject matter involves the subprime crisis? In all likelihood, making any connection between the dinosaurs and the subprime crisis would be impossible without the appropriate wording. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It is simply an honest assessment of the limitations of the cartoons visual imagery. But does it work? It depends. It is odd however, that irony is used as a means of promoting the argument style of persuasion. In a way, the cartoon heralds more than it seeks to persuade. So, really, its goal is not so much to be persuasive since it does not seek to promote a point to the doubting as much as it is a statement of fact. While a statement of fact can persuade some, such a statement is not automatically persuasive. For those who are logic and rational, however, it will have a stronger resonance that mixes pathos with logos. That is, it mixes humorous irony with obviously true facts. In the final analysis, it is safe to say that this particular editorial cartoon is brilliant. It mixes words and images together in an ironic and informative matter that stresses the gravity of the subprime crisis. Of course, the words and images do this well in combination. Separately, they would lack the effectiveness they possess as a tandem. Bibliography Toles, Tom. (2008) ââ¬Å"Unnamed Cartoonâ⬠. THE WASHINGTON POST. Oââ¬â¢Connor obvious displeasure with society at the time the story was written is most likely her religious and conservative upbringing in the ââ¬Å"old south.â⬠Oââ¬â¢Connor shows her point of view through an old woman named the grandmother. She uses the grandmother to depict Evidence of societyââ¬â¢s demise is woven into the story, and presented through an interesting generational gap between the old and the new (the grandmother and her family). Oââ¬â¢Connor use of irony throughout the story is a clear representation of the way in which she portrays the events yet to come. à à à à à The grandmother is by far the most outstanding of Oââ¬â¢Connor characters. Although all the characters contribute to the theme of the story the grandmother contributes the most because through her Oââ¬â¢Connorââ¬â¢s views and opinions about society are expressed. The grandmother, the protagonist, is developed as bossy, manipulative, and grouchy. Not only is she random and frivolous, but she also demonstrates hypocrisy. â⬠Arenââ¬â¢t you ashamed?â⬠she ask when June Star insults the owner of Red Sammyââ¬â¢s Barbeque, but experiences no personal shame when stating that ââ¬Å"little niggers in the country donââ¬â¢t have things like we do.â⬠(383) John Wesley and June Star have little if any respect for their parental grandmother.... janicelee19997http://www.blogger.com/profile/00636491119147224981noreply@blogger.com0
